To help you measure for your new curtains and blinds, follow our simple instructions below. Sophie has also created some made to measure video guides which you will find at the bottom of the page.
1. Use a metal tape measure, as cloth tape measures can stretch and give you inaccurate measurements.
2. Measure in 3 places for both the width and the drop and provide us with the smallest measurements. We will not make any deductions from the measurements given.
Measure the curtain track or pole width, not the window. If you are fitting a new track or pole, you should measure 15cm to 20cm either side of the window and at least 10 to 15cm above the window.
Measuring existing Curtain Poles
Measure the length of the pole between the finials or end caps, that is the width you should enter.
Measuring existing Curtain Tracks
Measure the length of the track. If you have a track with an overlap in the centre, measure the length of the track and add the length of the overlap to this measurement.
Measuring the Drop
The length of your curtains will depend on your preference and/or window size. Our suggested drop measurements are:
Full length, which is usually around 1.5cm above floor level.
To the window sill, which is usually around 15 – 20cm below the sill.
Above the radiator, which is usually 2-3cm above the radiator.
Pencil Pleat, Pinch Pleat, Goblet and Wave Heading Curtains
Measure from the top of the track or bottom of the curtain rings for a curtain pole to the desired length of your curtains.
Take your measurements from the top of the pole, to where you would like the curtain to finish at the bottom.
When choosing eyelet sizes, you will need an eyelet larger than your pole diameter, to make sure that the eyelets can move freely along your pole.
For Roman Blinds to sit on the Outside Recess
This is the measurement you need to make if your blind will sit on the outside recess of the window. Decide how much you wish to overlap the recess at each side, we recommend at around 7.5cm at each side as well as 10-15cm at the top.
For Roman Blinds to sit on the Inside Recess
This is the measurement you need to make if you would like your blind to fit inside the recess of the window. Measure from the top of the recess to the window sill.
Don’t forget to measure the width and the drop in three different positions ensuring you provide us with the smallest measurements.
